Flying back from Claremont last night we had a 30 knot headwind. I was amazed at the impact on our little bird. GFDH was almost at a standstill enroute back to City Centre. The tower tried to clear us to land before an incoming Dash 8, but at 58 knots (and that was when we descended to 1600 ft ASL), there was no way we were going to make it to the runway before our twin engine companions, even though we were asked if we could “keep the speed up any better”, hahaha!
So, we did a 360 to the left, the Dash 8 was cleared to land, and we came floating s-l-o-w-l-y in… many…. minutes… l a t e r!!!
Interestingly, the surface winds were only 5 knots! Made for some amusing and educational flight conditions on final.
I can see now why we had to cancel our cross country last weekend, with similar upper wind conditions. We would have been three hours back from Peterborough – at best!
