Sept 9 - Back in a Plane!
After a break of three months, I was a bit nervous about getting back behind the yoke of the Cessna. (Although I flew as a passenger a little this summer in PEI, it was my first time actually piloting a plane since June 10 of this year!)
Happily, we were booked in GGNJ, my favourite aircraft, and my trepidation dissipated as I remembered the checklists, routines and radio calls.
To be sure, things were a little dusty; my flying was not what it had become (not yet spectacular, but reasonably more than mediocre) by the end of last spring. Nevertheless, my radio work, my turns, and my circuits were at least inidicative of having spent some hours in a plane before in my life!
As with any lesson, there is always something “extraneous” to be learned or observed. As we returned to the circuit from Bluffers, where we had been practising steep turns, we noticed a rain cloud in the distance to the north west, and I took note of the dark gray area underneath it, indicating rain was falling in that vicinity. I do feel like there is a lot to relearn after my three-month hiatus from flying. But after today’s lesson, I am more confident that the gap is less insurmountable than I had feared earlier. It is good to be back in the skies! |
