Oct 2 - "Supply Teacher"
As is the custom at the school where I am learning to fly, I flew today with a different instructor. Having flown exclusively with Tatiana since Korkka left, we thought it would be a good idea to let someone else have a look and see how I might improve at this stage of the game.
I learned a lot from my "Supply Teacher" this evening:
I learned a lot from my "Supply Teacher" this evening:
Attitude is Everything One of the first things Korkka taught me, I have to confess, I've not done well with this -- I stare too much at the ASI, rather than LOOKING OUTSIDE!!! This was evident tonight as I watched the ASI during take off, rather than establishing best climb by visual reference to the horizon. Slow flight was another such example... not enough looking outside and checking out attitude! Will work on it. |
Instruments We spoke briefly about primary (attitude indicator) and secondary instruments (everything else), and also discussed the scan for "indirect" info about pitch attitude (VSI first then ALT, after AI) and bank (turn coordinator and HI). He suggested practising instrucment scan on Flight Sim. It's cheap/free, and effective! |
Landings (Or, Attitude Again!) One thing he told me was to establish my attitude for approach on the base leg, then do everything else to keep that. So, look outside - set attitude, then then play with power, flaps, etc. Also, not too much reduction in power at once (my favourite trick!) or the plane drops "like a rock". And... the ol' "look at the END of the runway" (but smarty supply teacher made me look beyond the runway, even, at the white dome, or counting sailboats for final on 08!) |
Although I am sure both Korkka and Tatiana have taught me the same things, sometimes it can help to have a different perspective -- now... let's see if I can remember it all the next time I fly!
