The reason for my sudden discovery of the apparently inobvious is that my flight instructor used to play the clarinet. So now I'm aware of these things. Because we are social creatures, and we make connections on a social level.
I am a music person, he plays (played) the clarinet, I am interested, we get talking about Shostakovich and other composers, I am more engaged, I begin to learn stuff during our flight lessons, I go to the Symphony, there's a piece with a clarinet solo in it, this reminds me of my flight instructor, I start thinking about flight lessons, I recall his chuckle when -- while giving me an ATIS with closely coupled temp and dew point-- I call out, "OH! We have to apply carb heat!", I smile to myself as I realise that I have finally learned something, I begin to go through the motions of various flight maneuvres in my mind, and right there in the back row of the middle balcony at the RTH, while Beethoven's 8th is blasting out from below, I am flying a plane!!!
And later, upon reflection, I am reminded of how critically important it is that we forge connections with people, especially with our students. Making connections helps build schema, and with an enhanced schema, we can make more connections.
Who knew that Beethoven would one day provoke thoughts of carb heat? Lol!
